Title: Silicone-associated tissue reaction: a dilemma for oral and maxillofacial surgeons
Abstract: A case report of cystic encapsulation of a silicone elastomer (∗Silastic: Polydimethyl Siloxane, Dow Corning Ltd) orbital floor implant is described. This is a known, but poorly understood complication of implanted silicone elastomer. Comparison is made with other complications associated with Silastic, and attention drawn to the phenomenon of excessive collagen formation demonstrated by the thick collagen cyst lining, analogous to fibrous 'cricket ball' breast implant encapsulation, which may be peculiar to certain predisposed individuals.
