Title: Response of barley crop to different tillage treatments on calcareous soil
Abstract: Tillage experiments for the barley crop (Hordeum vulgare L.) were conducted over a period of three growing seasons (1973 to 1975) in succession on calcereous silty clay soil. The various tillage treatments used for seedbed preparation were: mouldboard ploughing and discing, discing, field cultivator, field cultivator and discing, and no-tillage. Three depths of cultivation, 5, 15 and 25 cm were used in the experiments. The various tillage treatments were compared by measuring the crop yields obtained. Yields for the 3 years indicate that the system using the field cultivator and discing usually had a yield advantage over all other treatmements. The no-tillage treatment resulted in the lowest yield but there was some competition from weeds. In addition, increasing the depth of cultivation decreased the yield for all tillage treatments used.
