They acquired from them three main types of clicks and a...SYNOPSIS When coming down from the North the Nguni and Southern Sotho came into contact with the Hottentots, probably first with Korana tribes. They acquired from them three main types of clicks and a certain number of click‐words. Later, when the Nguni tribes dispersed, they added individually more such words to their common stock. To‐day click‐words form about one seventh of the Xhosa and Zulu vocabulary. For future comparative studies it would be of advantage to have a list of the click‐words which Xhosa, Zulu and Sotho have in common. Such a list is herewith presented. Of the 2395 click‐words which are given in the Xhosa dictionary, only 376 are shared with Zulu and Sotho. The remaining 2000 must have been acquired after the division of the Nguni, probably from the Gonaqua who blended with the Xhosa and lost their identity as Hottentots.Read More
