Title: Du bon usage de la monstruosité : la vision de l'Afrique chez Alonso de Sandoval (1627)
Abstract: Dans son œuvre De Instauranda Aethiopum Salute (1627), le jésuite Alonso de Sandoval désire convaincre les lecteurs qu'il est urgent de s'occuper du salut des milliers d'esclaves noirs qui travaillent aux Indes. Il compile les données au sujet de l'Afrique que possède son époque. Lorsqu'il ne dispose pas d'informations fournies par ses collègues d'Afrique, il utilise la tradition gréco-latine et la patristique, de sorte qu'à côté d'aspects sérieux, bien que déformés par le prisme idéologique, apparaissent certains éléments mythiques comme le merveilleux et le monstrueux. L'on trouvait déjà ces deux éléments dans les premières chroniques hispano- américaines. Sandoval voit, dans l'évocation de la monstruosité africaine, un moyen d'attirer l'attention sur la nécessité de se préoccuper de l'éducation religieuse des esclaves en provenance des côtes africaines.
