Title: Estimation of the cost of post-operative nausea and vomiting in an ambulatory surgery center
Abstract: The total costs of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) to an ambulatory surgery center and to the patient were estimated using pre-tested cost-of-illness methodology. Data were obtained on 99 adults undergoing outpatient surgery requiring general anesthesia. The total cost of PONV was $1,055.29 (primarily due to lost revenue) and $71.72 (primarily due to lost wages) per patient with PONV, to the center and patient, respectively. The annual total cost to the center was approximately $284,000. PONV, comonly associated with outpatient surgery, can result in additional costs to the surgery center and patient.
