Title: John Milton's Influence on the Inspired Poetry of Charlotte Brontë
Abstract: Charlotte Brontë's poetry calls us to consider her use of vision in the context of Milton's inspired poetics for several reasons: her own use of Miltonic language, the importance of Milton to nineteenth-century British literary culture, and, perhaps most importantly, the parallel between Milton's focus on divine and demonic vision and Brontë's. Ultimately Charlotte Brontës work suggests that vision can be both a source of authority and a symptom of madness or sin; thus, the task of the inspired poet is to unite the divine power of vision with reason and moral excellence.
