Title: The Shakespearean soliloquy: A problem of focus
Abstract: This essay examines the question of address in Shakespearean soliloquies. To test the contention of John Barton, noted English director, that 99% of the soliloquies should be shared directly with the audience, the videotape which originally treated the question was examined. Next, 61 soliloquies from six Shakespearean tragedies were closely studied as were videotaped productions of each play to see how each soliloquy was performed. The study reveals that the decision to share a soliloquy with the audience is debatable and may not be as simple to achieve as Barton suggests.
