Title: Subculturr, Microcultuur En Macrocultuur een Poging Tot Begripsafgrenzing
Abstract: Abstract SUBCULTURE, MICROCULTURE AND MACROCULTURE AN ATTEMPT AT CONCEPTUAL DIFFERENTIATION: The concept “subculture” has caused problems in the correct application of the concept as it is used to stand for a multitude of cultural and social phenomena. The main thesis is that subcultures are dsubordinate cultures within cultures. This means that a subculture emanates from a certain culture. To this effect culture is defined and is followed by definitions of subculture. Some new concepts are introduced. It is suggested that the culture to which a certain subculture belongs, is called “dome culture”. The cultural pattern of non-indigenous groups (e.g. immigrants) and other minority groups with their own culture is called “micro culture”, i.e. not a subculture. The cultural pattern in which these groups live and which influence their daily life is called “macro culture” as distinguished from “dome culture” of which they are not apart. In contradiction to Yinger his term “contraculture” is changed into “contra subculture” while his original term is used to describe the attitude of an aggressive culture toward another culture with the aim to overrun or suppress it. In a diagram the several concepts are put into a logical interrelated position.
