Abstract: Before getting down to an examination of the state of youth subcultures in the Republic of Tatarstan, we must agree on the meaning to be ascribed to the terms "culture" and "subculture." What we mean by culture is the system of values, beliefs about life, and codes of behavior that is characteristic of a given society or large social group [1, p. 41]—things that determine a way of life, something that is specific in the manner of self-expression of an individual, a social group, or a people [2, pp. 165-66]. What we mean by subculture is the system of values, attitudes, modes of behavior, and lifestyles characteristic of a smaller social community that is, to a greater or lesser extent, separate spatially and socially. Subcultural attributes, rituals as established modes of behavior, and values are generally distinct from those in the dominant culture, although they do have connections with them [3, p. 325].
