Abstract: Le livre d'artiste au Québec : contribution à une histoire JEAN-MARCEL DUCIAUME Ce qui nous intéresse ici, ce n'est pas tant la valeur littéraire du livre, ce à quoi on s'est toujours arrêté, mais le livre en soi, le livre dans sa production matérielle, le livre pris comme «motif».La manière dont il a été traité, voire transformé par l'artiste ou encore par le «maître-d'oeuvre», l'artisan responsable de l'intégration de tous les éléments composants du livre d'artiste (maquette, design, typographie, illustration, impression, etc.).Après avoir défini le «livre d'artiste» et montré ce en quoi il se distingue du «livre d'art», du «livre de luxe», du «livre illustré», du «livre-objet», et défini également la tradition dans laquelle il s'inscrit, nous présenterons un bref historique du livre d'artiste au Québec.On souhaiterait, bien entendu, que la définition du «livre d'artiste» surgisse d'elle-même, de la pratique ou de la fréquentation du livre, mais la production est tellement abondante et les directions si disparates qu'on ne peut guère s'y hasarder.Il faut donc procéder de façon rigoureuse, à partir de critères suffisamment objectifs pour qu'on ne risque pas d'embrasser trop ou trop peu.Claudette Hould adopte d'emblée «la règle de l'estampe originale, c'est-à-dire les oeuvres obtenues par les procédés traditionnels de la gravure (burin, pointe-sèche, eau-forte, bois linoléum) ou par les procédés d'impression sérigraphique et lithographique à condition que tout procédé photomécanique soit rigou-
