Title: On Emptying Chamber Pots Without Looking and the Urban Location of Buddhist Nunneries in Early India Again
Abstract: Peu d'attention a ete pretee, jusqu'a une periode tres recente, a la question des lieux ou vivaient les nonnes bouddhistes de l'Inde ancienne et a celle de l'emplacement de leurs couvents. Il a ete note qu'un vinaya (code monastique) au moins contient une regle explicite selon laquelle ces couvents doivent etre situes dans des villes et que d'autres vinaya et regles semblent enteriner cet emplacement. C'est une de ces regles, presente dans tous les vinaya sous une forme ou une autre, que l'on examine ici. Cette regle presente comme une infraction, de la part d'une nonne, le fait de vider un pot de chambre par-dessus un mur sans prendre la precaution de regarder au prealable. L'on suggere ici que cela ne pouvait former un probleme que si les nonnes vivaient en ville. Sont discutees differentes versions de cette regle ainsi que les recits qui content les circonstances et les raisons de sa promulgation, notamment ceux conserves en pāli et en tibetain. L'on evoque aussi, a cette occasion, l'incertitude qui pese sur l'affiliation sectaire du Bhiksunī-vibhaṅga conserve en Tibetain. Enfin, l'on souligne que tous ces recits, quoiqu'ils portent sur les nonnes, furent presque certainement ecrits par des hommes et que l'un d'entre eux, au moins, parait etre une satire deliberee de ce qui etait alors percu comme etant un certain type de nonne arrogante.
