CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1979, 50, 97-105. The hypothesis that comprehension involves metacognition, the use of which increases as reading ability develops, was investigated. A cloze test was devised to measure differences in the reader's use of running and subsequent text. This test was administered to secondary level pupils and to 132 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade pupils. The total score from the cloze test was highly correlated with traditional comprehension measures. However, in support of the hypothesis, and for both groups of subjects, the difference in the 2 scores decreased linearly with increases in reading ability. The results were discussed in terms of the requirements for monitoring comprehension, developing expectations related to where information is located in the text, and learning strategies for sampling such information.Read More
