Title: The mechanism for increased protein synthesis during Xenopus oocyte maturation
Abstract: The translational efficiency of Xenopus oocytes before and after the induction of maturation was determined. Polysomes from control and mature oocytes sedimented in a sucrose gradient with a peak value of 300 S, which corresponds to a weight-average packing density of 10 ribosomes per mRNA. The level of radioactivity associated with nascent chains approximately doubled in mature oocytes relative to controls. While, in certain instances, the ribosome transit times of injected heterologous mRNAs did decrease during maturation, the transit times of endogenous mRNAs did not change. Taken together, the data indicate that the twofold increase in protein synthesis which occurs during Xenopus oocyte maturation (W. J. Wasserman, J. D. Richter, and L. D. Smith, 1982, Develop. Biol. 89, 152–158) is due primarily to a recruitment of mRNA rather than a change in translational efficiency.
