Abstract: There is increasing evidence that monocyte adhesion to the endothelium and migration into the subendothelium are early events in foam cell development and fatty-streak formation. Recent studies have identified three families of complementary receptors on monocytes and endothelial cells that may mediate this directed migration of monocytes in response to chemoattractants derived from vessel wall cells. Current studies have focused on the activation of these receptors in response to specific chemoattractants.
