Les traditions relatives à la fondation de Lavinium font intervenir trois animaux, une louve accompagnée d'un aigle et une truie avec trente petits. On peut mettre en parallèle la place faite, dans la légende des jumeaux romains, à la louve accompagnée d'un oiseau, ou de plusieurs, et d'espèces variables, lors de leur allaitement miraculeux, et, plus tard, lors d'un prodige, à la truie aux trente petits. La présence de l'oiseau, dans ce second cas, paraît liée à sa valeur ominale; la gésine de la truie semble être un symbole de fécondité. Il est donc possible que l'intervention de ces trois animaux soit à interpréter dans un sens fonctionnel, en rapport avec les valeurs assumées, au sein de la triade primitive, par Jupiter, Mars, Quirinus.
