Abstract: Volume Three of Clinical Ethics sees the launch of a new series of cases provided and discussed by UK clinical ethics committees. This series replaces the Virtual Ethics Committee section, which appeared in each issue of the first two volumes of the journal. For this new series, we invited clinical ethics committees registered with the Clinical Ethics Network to consider submitting a case to a bank from which we would then allocate them a different case to discuss. The committees were given some guidance on how to generate a case, including the advice that unless consent from all parties to a case could be obtained, we would prefer fictional cases based on the combined experiences of the committee, or on an issue that they thought needed to be more widely discussed. The editorial committee took this decision in order to safeguard patient and clinician confidentiality ‐ a perennial concern for those working with case-based materials. To the same end, we decided that the committee referring a case would not be identified (as this would provide a geographical indicator of identity), but we would name the committee discussing the case. We acknowledge that this entails a sacrifice for the referring committee who will have worked hard to present the case in a manner suited to our needs. We hope that they will accept that their good work cannot be acknowledged as openly as we would like but that it is greatly appreciated nonetheless.
