Title: The Himalayan grain chenopods. II. Comparative morphology
Abstract: The Himalayan grain chenopods, considered as domesticated forms of Chenopodium album L., exhibit considerable morphological diversity. Four locally recognised chenopod varieties were taken up for comparative study of plant height, leaf shape variations, branching habit, inflorescence type and seed morphology. Results revealed that three of the four cultivars, the black, brown and the red, are identical in gross morphology, differeing only in seed polymorphism. The fourth, earthen cultivar, is quite distinct from the former three cultivars, raising doubts about its close taxonomic relationships either with C. album L. or C. quinoa Willd. For the black, brown and the red cultivars, there was enough evidence to recognise them as C. album L. domesticates. The type of seed polymorphism found in these cultivars gives an indication of their close relationship to non-domesticated C. album L.
