Title: School-based teacher development the experience of teacher professional groups in secondary schools in Chile
Abstract: The article deals with a teacher professional development activity being implemented in Chilean secondary schools as part of the education reform aimed at improving quality and equity of public funded education. It focuses on the manner in which research results and international experience can illuminate policy decisions in a particular country context. The results of monitoring exercises in 1995 and 1996 and of a case study of two schools in 1996, serve to describe the implementation of the programme, its strong points and the factors affecting its results.
