Abstract: la "Memoria" del cura don Joaquín Alexo de Meabe (ca. 1794)Introducción E l documento que a continuación se presenta fue localizado en el Archivo del Cabildo de la Catedral de Puebla, en el interior de un legajo de "Papeles curiosos e importantes".Se trata de una detallada descripción de los materiales y el procedimiento necesarios para manufacturar unos tejidos y tintes aromáticos conocidos con el nombre de Coapaxtles, 2 así como otras teñiduras semejantes.A finales de 79, el autor del texto -el cura Joaquín Alexo de Meabe-se trasladó de su curato en Olinalá al de Tlapan para iniciar la investigación y, al parecer, hacia 794 el documento se encontraba prácticamente terminado.El autor insinúa que el texto era el producto de un "patriota ilustrado" interesado en rescatar los conocimientos artísticos propiamente americanos.Así, explica que, a pesar de la existencia de algunos "censores" que calificaban el arte de la tintorería como una ocupación "vana" e "infructuosa", él se había dado a la tarea de redactar esta memoria con la finalidad de saciar "la curiosidad de los eruditos" que anhelaran "instruirse en las artes ingeniosas de los indios".
