Title: Evaluating peer reviews of writing using fault injection
Abstract: Advanced writing courses are required in many college majors, including computer science. This paper describes an experimental tool and approach created to improve peer reviews of writing. Students benefit from participating in peer reviews of each others' writings. It has been found[1] that peer reviews were as good or better than reviews by instructors on student achievement and attitudes. One aspect of peer reviews that is important is the amount of effort that students put into the peer review process. In [2] students who provided more detailed comments improved their own writing more than students that provided numeric only feedback. Intuitively, it seems reasonable that students that put more effort into the peer review process will get more out of it. One way to encourage students to fully participate in the peer review process is to provide accurate and timely feedback on their reviews.
