Title: Les Objets trickster dans l’art contemporain autochtone au Canada
Abstract: Le trickster est un personnage légendaire, présent dans toutes les cultures autochtones d’Amérique du Nord. C’est l’anthropologue Paul Radin qui, en 1956, a décrit et analysé pour la première fois le mythe complet du trickster chez les Winnebagos. Chez ces derniers, le trickster a pour nom Wakdjunkaga, ce qui signifie littéralement « celui-qui-joue-des-tours ». La particularité du trickster est en effet de ne jamais être là où on l’attend, d’être insaisissable. C’est pour cette raison que durant les années 1990 toute une génération d’artistes autochtones canadiens (Edward Poitras, Rebecca Belmore, Shelley Niro, Carl Beam, Joane Cardinal-Schubert…) s’est reconnue dans cette figure mythique qui permet d’échapper au réductionnisme identitaire. Chez ces artistes, le trickster se manifeste de façon privilégiée sous la forme du coyote : coyote stripteaseuse chez Rebecca Belmore, coyote squelette hurlant dans les plaines enneigées chez Edward Poitras... Nous aimerions ici nous concentrer sur les pratiques récentes d’artistes autochtones canadiens qui, au lieu de mettre directement en scène la figure du trickster, ont fait migrer l’esprit du fripon à l’intérieur même de leur démarche artistique en brouillant systématiquement les registres de l’art, de la marchandise et de l’anthropologie. C’est par exemple le cas de Brian Jungen (nation dunne-za), qui utilise des chaussures de sport Nike pour recréer des masques cérémoniels des peuples de la côte nord-ouest du Canada ou encore des chaises de jardin en plastique pour reconstituer d’immenses squelettes de cétacés. C’est également le cas de Ron Noganosh (nation ojibwa), qui crée des boucliers traditionnels à l’aide de matériaux hétérogènes (soie Pierre Cardin, cannettes de bières écrasées…) afin de mettre en lumière la déculturation des peuples autochtones. C’est précisément ce jeu de déplacement des objets sur la frontière de l’art et du non-art, jeu empreint à la fois d’humour et de gravité, qui reproduit l’esprit trickster.
