Abstract: Energy saving is of vital interest for Sweden. Imported fuel counts for 87% of all fuel used in Sweden and 66% of the total energy consumption. Of the total energy consumption buildings use 40%. Energy saving in building is consequently a main issue in Sweden. The climate is characterized by mild winters but a long heating period. Different strategies for energy saving in new buildings are discussed in the paper as minimizing heat losses due to transmission, ventilation and waste water, zoning of indoor climate, utilization of solar energy and heat storage of temporary heat flow. New single family houses normally have 200 mm of insulation in walls, 300 in ceilings to the attic, and windows are equipped with triple glazing. In existing buildings house-owners are encouraged to save energy by favourable loans and grants. A survey of energy consumption before and after energy saving measures shows that calculated savings are achieved on the average, but the variation of the energy saving is very large.
