Abstract: Maurice Merleau-Ponty er emnet for Thomas Illum Hansens artikel om Verdens prosa. Hvilken rolle spiller litteraturen i Merleau-Pontys sprogfilosofi? spørger Illum Hansen. Det, der interesserer Merleau-Ponty, er nemlig ”den litterære og den kommunikative erfarings mulige mirakel: at der indstiftes ny betydning”; sproget må forstås som ”en regelstyret aktivitet, der er funderet i subjektet og perceptionen,” men netop af den grund træder et begreb om litterær fremmederfaring i undersøgelsens centrum. Læseerfaringen kan ikke udtømmes i en sprogformidlet, mellemmenneskelig gennemsigtighed; læseren er derimod konfronteret med en udtryks- og erfaringsstil i det litterære værk, der samtidig privilegerer litteraturen som et sted, hvor betydning dannes gennem fremmederfaring – hvilket i sidste ende influerer på læserens selvforståelse.
