Title: Coal cleaning readies for wider sulfur-removal role
Abstract: Coal cleaning can be an effective way of reducing SO/sub x/ emissions. The cost of flue-gas desulphurization is reduced if some of the sulphur is removed by cleaning the coal. Where coal is used as a feedstock for gasification, or for other coal conversion processes, the use of cleaned coal may reduce the capital and operating costs of the gasification reactor or conversion plant. Methods of physcal or chemical cleaning, which are being developed, are reviewed. The physical separation techniques used now are adequate for only about 16 to 17 percent of US coal.
