Title: Meeting the coal export challenge: Massey coal terminal
Abstract: United States coal reserves account for nearly 28% of the total global recoverable reserves. With increasing demand for steam coal to meet the world's energy needs, the United States has an opportunity to capture a large share of the expanding market. The Port of Hampton Roads in particular can be further developed to insure its continued lead as the Nation's largest coal export port. The Massey Coal Export Facility located in Newport News, Hampton Roads, will utilize the latest techniques in coal handling, and will have the ability to export a minimum of 12 million tons annually after its 1983 scheduled start-up. The open storage area, with a design capacity of 2 million tons will allow for custom blending and immediate vessel loading. This paper discusses the development of the Massey facility. Emphasis is placed on the modern design concepts as well as environmental considerations. 5 refs.
