Title: 2010: A TRAFFIC ODYSSEY: A LOOK BACK AT ITS IN THE 'NOUGHTS': PART ONE
Abstract: This article considers a realistically optimistic scenario of the future for ITS (intelligent transportation systems) in the US, based on extrapolating current trends. It follows a previous article in this journal, June/July 2000, and completes the survey by covering safety and control systems, commercial and transit vehicle operations and rural ITS. Advanced vehicle safety and control systems include automated handling aids and crash warning systems, in-vehicle information and automation systems. In 2010 it is anticipated that driver education will have reduced reluctance to use full automation. Crash data recorders are installed in trucking and transit industry vehicles and are spreading to private cars. Commercial vehicles continue to use automated handling aids and platooning is being developed. Comprehensive safety information is available for on-the-road and roadside enforcement. Freight transport has been made smoother by use of just-in-time technology. Advanced Public Transportation Systems and enhanced fleet management systems have made travel information display systems commonplace. The use of flexible routes, paratransit, transit hubs and bus rapid transit continues to increase. The Advanced Rural Transportation Systems program provides road, weather and information systems and has expanded to cover inter-city and rural travel.
