In doing so, it suggests that we can detect "centripetal" and "centrifugal" tendencies in examinations of the workings of ritual, and argues for more attention to be paid to the latter. It is also proposed that contemporary pilgrimage practices provide important indications of the current and future directions of ritual practices in plural, Western contexts.
