Abstract: The newest tramway in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is route 25, the Carnisselande Line. The cost of providing the 12km line with 21 stops has been 85 million Euros. Low-floor Alstom Citadis trams run on the line with peak headways of 7 minutes. The dormitory city of Carnisselande was designed with trams in mind, with the alignment in a straight line allowing speeds of 50 km/h. Route 25 has been completed before the city development has been finished, in order to encourage residents to use the trams. Route 25 is operated by RET. The northern terminus is in front of Centraal station and the line passes over the Nieuwe Maas over the Erasmus Bridge, also used by tramlines 20 and 23. The bridge has tram tracks on reservations in the median strip. Route 25 branches off from line 20 at Breeplein and goes on to Carnisselande. Line 25 forms part of the TramPlus scheme, which aims at a quality light rail network within an existing city network. The TramPlus concept offers commercial speeds of at least 25 km/h and a maximum stop dwell time of 20 seconds, obstacle-free platforms with a height of 280 mm and where possible a width of 3m.
