Title: Energy Transfer and its Regulation in Supramolecular Systems
Abstract: Een groeiende tak van de scheikunde houdt zich bezig met het ontwerpen en realiseren van `mechanische' en `elektronische' apparaten op (supra)moleculaire schaal. Een belangrijke voorwaarde voor het functioneren van zo’n moleculair apparaat is dat de benodigde energie- en/of ladingsstromen goed worden gekanaliseerd, d.w.z. de energie of elektronen moeten op de juiste plaats terecht komen en niet 'weglekken' in ongewenste richting. In dit proefschrift worden de resultaten beschreven van studies naar de ultrasnelle dynamica van drie systemen, die te gebruiken zijn als elementen in supramoleculaire energietransportsystemen. Twee daarvan zijn zelf (relatief simpele) energietransportsystemen, de derde een moleculaire schakelaar die het mogelijk moet maken om energietoevoer te kontroleren. Het onderzoek is voornamelijk gedaan met behulp van tijdsopgeloste elektronische spectroscopie (pump-probe en fluorescentie (upconversion)). Na een algemene introductie in hoofdstuk 1 geven h. 2 en 3 achtergrondinformatie over respectievelijk de experimentele setups en energietransfer. De hoofdstukken 4 t/m 6, hieronder kort beschreven, behandelen en bediscussieren vervolgens de experimentele resultaten. Hoofdstuk 4 behandelt aggregaten van cyanines, mogelijke kandidaten voor het verzorgen van energietransport op nanoschaal. De door ons bestudeerde carbocyanines zijn gesubstitueerd met zowel hydrofobe als hydrofiele groepen. Hierdoor blijken zij zich in een waterige omgeving te organiseren in de vorm van dubbelwandige cylinders met een diameter van 10-15 nm en een lengte tot enkele mm. Sterke onderlinge koppeling tussen de cyaninechromoforen resulteert in gedeeltelijke delocalisatie van elektronische excitaties over de binnen- en buitenwand van het aggregaat. Dit uit zich o.a. in een veelbandig, sterk roodverschoven UV/VIS absorptiespectrum. Met behulp van lineair dichroisme spectra en een door Didraga en Knoester ontwikkeld Frenkel exciton model konden de belangrijkste absorptiebanden worden toegewezen aan de laagste aangeslagen toestanden op de binnen- en buitenwand. Daarnaast werd de invloed van oppervlakte-aktieve stoffen op cylinderradius en absorptiespectrum in kaart gebracht. Fluorescentie/pump-probe spectroscopie wees vervolgens uit dat de elektronische systemen op de twee wanden zwak gekoppeld zijn. Daardoor vindt energietransport plaats van de buiten- naar de binnenwand met een tijdsconstante van ca. 275 femtoseconden. Tenslotte blijkt dat bij zeer hoge excitatiedichtheden energietransport kan plaatsvinden in de omgekeerde richting, van lage naar hoge excitatie-energie. Dit wordt waarschijnlijk mogelijk gemaakt door energie die vrijkomt bij exciton-exciton annihilatie. Interacties tussen meerdere excitaties op een systeem zijn nader onderzocht bij een eerste-generatie dendrimeer met 4 potentiele energiedonoren (coumarines) op de vier armen en 1 energieacceptor in het centrum (tetraphenylporphyrine); de resultaten zijn beschreven in hoofdstuk 5. In dit systeem bleken de chromoforen onderling zwak gekoppeld te zijn, wat een beschrijving van het energietransport in termen van Forster theorie mogelijk maakt. Met behulp van ‘fluorescence upconversion’ experimenten werd vastgesteld dat bij een lage excitatieintensiteit (1 aangeslagen energie-donor per molecuul) energie van de donor naar de acceptor wordt getransporteerd met een karakteristieke tijd van 500 fs. Bij hogere excitatie-intensiteiten (>1 aangeslagen energie-donor per molecuul) bleek de tijdsconstante voor energietransport ongewijzigd, terwijl de relatieve fluorescentieopbrengst daalde. Met behulp van simulaties werd de meest waarschijnlijke verklaring voor deze observaties gevonden: de porphyrine-acceptor accepteert terwijl het aangeslagen is gemakkelijk een tweede excitatie, en de hierbij geabsorbeerde energie wordt daarna zeer snel verloren aan vibraties. Dit fenomeen lijkt sterk op de in aggregaten voorkomende exciton-annihilatie. Een manier om energie- of elektrontransport te kontroleren is via moleculaire fotochromische schakelaars. Hoofdstuk 6 behandelt een gedetailleerde karakterisering van de ultrasnelle schakeling van op bisthienylcyclopenteen gebaseerde schakelaars. Deze moleculen kunnen, na selectieve excitatie m.b.v. licht een reversibele ringsluitingsreactie ondergaan tussen twee stabiele toestanden, waarvan een geconjugeerd en geleidend is en de andere niet. Dit biedt mogelijkheden om zowel energie- als ladingstransport te reguleren. Het blijkt echter dat in oplossing slechts de helft van de schakelaars daadwerkelijk schakelt. De reden hiervoor ligt in het bestaan van twee conformaties; slechts een van deze conformaties is in staat de schakelreactie te ondergaan. Met behulp van pump-probe spectroscopie en quantumchemische berekeningen kon het volgende ’ringsluitingsscenario’ worden geschtetst: na menging van elektronische toestanden op een sub-100 fs tijdsschaal vindt binnen 500 fs een gedeeltelijke ringsluiting plaats in de laagste aangeslagen toestand. De grondtoestand van de gesloten vorm wordt vervolgens bereikt met een tijdsconstante van 4.2 ps. Een vergelijking met de perfluorocyclopenteen-analoog van deze schakelaar wijst uit dat de laatste bijna 5 keer sneller schakelt, door een gunstiger positie en vorm van de ’avoided crossing’ tussen de grond- en eerste aangeslagen toestand.
