Title: Lagos Puts Right Conditions in Place to Exceed the Doubling Target
Abstract: In 2008, Lagos, Nigeria launched a bus rapid transit (BRT) system. This article describes the system and how its success is helping Lagos meet its target of doubling the modal share of public transit by 2025. The first phase of the 22 km BRT corridor took only 15 months from conception to operation. Full attributes of the BRT system are being introduced in stages. Establishing a transport authority, implementing an appropriate regulatory framework, franchising transportation services and synergy with all local stakeholders were keys to success. In its first two years of operation, the BRT market share increased from 0 to 3% of all motorized transportation trips in Lagos. When the BRT system is completed, it will have 155 km of dedicated lanes and hopefully will capture 16% of all motorized transportation trips. Lagos also has plans to establish a light rail transit system by 2020.
