Title: WASHINGTON UNION STATION: BACK FROM THE BRINK
Abstract: The redevelopment of Washington Union Station has transformed the once federal embarrassment into a dazzling white-granite jewel of Capitol Hill. The $160 million renovation boasts of Roman columns, 120 stores and cafes, a nine-screen cinema, color video monitors displaying arrival and departure times for Amtrak trains, train concourses, a subway station and many other features which maintain its integrity as a railroad station while providing a mixture of shoppers, commuters, long-haul passengers, tourists, and lunch-hour strollers under one roof.
