Abstract: During 1985, 1986, and 1987, extensive blooms of Aureococcus anophagefferens (“brown tides”) in eastern Long Island, New York waters decimated most of the commercially valuable stocks of bay scallops, Argopecten irradians irradians (Anonymous, 1985; Siddall, 1986). Recruitment of larval scallops in these areas also appeared to be very poor during both 1985 and 1986 (Siddall and Nelson, 1986; Bricelj et al., 1987a). These events have virtually eliminated the bay scallop fishery on Long Island, an industry which in 1984 produced approximately one-fourth of the total United States harvest and employed from 400–600 full-time baymen (Anonymous, 1985).
