The Bay receives the 4 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">th</sup> largest river discharge in the continental United States of America. The large river discharge results in strong water column stratification not only inside the Bay but on the inner shelf adjoining the Bay.
