Title: The use of recycled construction materials in the manufacture of road building materials
Abstract: Sydney, Australia area provides 1.2 million t of asphalt and concrete annually for recycling. This paper examines a study to assess the feasibility of producing a road base that complies with the New South Wales State Road Authority Specification for unbound pavement material that uses locally available crushed concrete and reclaimed asphalt pavement material. The study considered the following issues in developing fully recycled pavement materials: limitations of recycled materials; foreign materials; blending of recycled materials; specifications; and management of stockpiles. The field trials have demonstrated that handling and compaction characteristics of the recycled materials produced for the trials are superior to the control that was a conventional crushed rock road base. The trial sections have also performed well with no failures under heavy traffic.
