Leederville is one of four district centres in the Town and has gone from being economically isolated, after being cut off from half its hinterland by a freeway in the 1960s, to a developing and vibrant mixed use centre supported by a passenger train station and a local government willing to be innovative in encouraging and responding to development opportunities. Recent developments in Leederville include large-scale mixed use developments, revamping of a major sporting complex and construction of the new headquarters for a State government department, as well as the establishment of the Town’s administration centre in 1995. All this has been achieved without a ‘master-plan’, although one is now being developed, with common sense, pragmatism and opportunism being key factors. The paper illustrates how a local government can foster appropriate development in a location well-served by transit without having to commit large financial resources. Equally important, there been no compromising of Leederville’s heritage in terms of urban design, architecture or ethnic diversity.Read More
