Title: PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION COMMUNICATIONS : CURRENT SPECTRUM USAGE AND FUTURE NEEDS
Abstract: In an April 1994 letter, the FCC noted that information on public transportation spectrum usage was required to prepare a report to Congress on public safety spectrum usage and needs as required by the Omnibus Budget Act of 1993. Acting under the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) Committee, the Communications Spectrum Working Group (CSWG) has initiated a process to assemble information on current bus transit communications spectrum usage and future requirements. This paper summarizes the results reported by transit agencies on their current and estimated future fleet sizes, the number of communication channels and portable communications units currently in use, the number of additional radio channels required due to fleet growth, and the application of intelligent transportation system (ITS) and APTS technologies to public transit.
