Title: THE INFLUENCE OF ROCK CHARACTERISTICS ON THE STABILITY OF ROCK CAVITIES
Abstract: THE STATICS PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN ROCK MATERIALS ARE DISCUSSED. THE PROBLEMS OF STATICS OR THE HOLLOW SPACE OR CAVITY IN A GEOLOGICAL FORMATION ARE INVESTIGATED AND IT IS ATTEMPTED TO EXPLAIN THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS ROCK PROPERTIES OR ROCK CONDITIONS. DIFFERENCES ARE POINTED OUT BETWEEN CONVENTIONAL STATICS FROM THE STATICS OF ROCK. ONE FACTOR IS THE EXISTENCE OF SUBSTANTIAL EXISTING OR RESIDUAL STRESS. ANY INVESTIGATION OF ROCK MECHANICS MUST BE BASED ON SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE NATURAL STRESS SITUATION EXISTING IN THE SYSTEM BEFORE ANY WORK HAS STARTED. EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE NATURAL STATE OF STRESSES IS THE FIRST TASK OF ROCK MECHANICS. ROCK PROPERTIES FOR ROCK MECHANIC STUDIES ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES: STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION. THESE PROPERTIES DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF MAN-MADE CHANGES (SUCH AS TUNNEL EXCAVATION) TO THE GEOLOGIC STRUCTURE AND, THEREBY THE FORCES IMPOSED ON THESE MAN-MADE STRUCTURES. PROPERTIES OF A WHOLE FORMATION ARE USUALLY EXPRESSED BY A SERIES OF ENVELOPE LINES, EACH OF THEM BEING VALID ONLY FOR A CERTAIN DIRECTION OF THE PRINCIPAL STRESS AXIS. AN EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION CAN BE MADE OF ROCK CHARACTERISTICS, FRICTION AND COHESION IN AN ANISOTROPIC ROCK RELATED TO THE DIRECTION OF THE STRESSES AND SLIDING MOVEMENT. THE STRESS STRAIN DIAGRAM MUST BE DETERMINED TO REACH A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF PLASTIC DEFORMATION. STRESSES AND DEFORMATIONS ARE RELATED THROUGH ELASTIC MODULUS AND POISSON'S RATIO. THE MECHANICS OF ROCK CONTINUOUS SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED.
