Title: New rapid rail systems: will they do the job
Abstract: The U.S. Urban Mass Transportation Admin. committed $245 million on people movers in Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles, and St. Paul, Minn. Automated guideway transit has many desirable qualities, but also a serious drawback: technology is not advanced. Progress made with shuttle loop transit, group rapid transit, and personal rapid transit is scrutinized. The internal circulation alternative case study for Crystal City, Va., across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., is highlighted. (2 photos)
