Title: Searching for arriving on-time tolerance - New Swiss data for travel time reliabilityanalysis
Abstract: Travel time, as one of the key factors that influence travel decisions, plays an important role in transport planning. More and more researchers find out that not only travel time itself, but also travel time reliability can affect the travel decisions, and sometimes the latter is valued more. In this paper the authors explore how travel time reliability influences travelers’ choices. Even though every trip is supposed to have an ideal preferred arrival time (PAT), it is also well accepted that travelers’ regarded a certain buffer time around the PAT as arriving on time. Based on this, the paper focuses on travelers’ on-time tolerance while using a schedule model to explain value of travel time savings (VTTS) as well as value of travel time reliability (VOR). In order to do this, a specially designed stated preference survey, in which the travel time follows a lognormal distribution, was distributed to collect data in Switzerland. Because the specified travel time distribution, a theoretical analysis for the expected on-time as well as expected earliness and lateness are conducted, followed by a heuristic search for the on-time tolerance of the respondents. The results shows that VTTS is more or less identical as similar Swiss studies while the VORs show relatively higher values compared to the other surveys.
