Title: [Status of infant and maternal mortality. Comparative analysis of the regions: Estremadura, Murcia, Madrid and the Basque Provinces-Navarre with the Spanish state].
Abstract: National and regional statistics on maternal and infant mortality and various socioeconomic characteristics for the years 1968-74 were used to compare current mortality trends in 4 regions of Spain at varying levels of socioeconomic development. Per capita income was 62796 pesetas in Extremadura 75791 in Murcia 132185 in the Basque Provinces 141288 in Madrid and 102880 in Spain as a whole. Murcia and Extremadura had high proportions of the labor force in agriculture while the Basque Provinces and Madrid had high concentrations of industrial workers. Murcia and Extremadura had lower proportions of their populations in the 15-65 age group. Extremadura and Murcia were regions of outmigration while Madrid and the Basque Provinces attracted migrants. The proportion of houses without running water was 39% in Extremadura 17% in Murcia 3% in Madrid 2% in the Basque country and 13% for Spain. All 4 regions had more than the national average of maternity hospital beds but Extremadura had no beds for infants and Murcia had fewer than average. All regions except Madrid had fewer physicians/1000 inhabitants than did the Spanish population as a whole. Murcia and the Basque Provinces had fewer midwives than the national average. Indices of neonatal mortality were declining slowly in all areas while postneonatal mortality was declining at a faster rate with more regional differences. Neonatal and postneonatal mortality rates respectively in 1974 were 17.7 and 10.2 for Extremadura; 11.4 and 8.1 for Murcia; 11.6 and 5.7 for Madrid; 14.3 and 6.7 for the Basque Provinces; and 13.1 and 6.7 for Spain. Maternal mortality rates in 1974 were .4 in Extremadura .2 in Murcia .1 in Madrid .3 in the Basque Provinces and .2 in Spain. The social environment influencing the health status of mothers and infants is thus seen to be a function of the economic resources and forms of production of diffferent regions. (summary in ENG FRE)
