Title: Pain Relief with Phototherapy: Session Overview
Abstract: In this overview of the session on the relief of pain with phototherapy the clinical significance of acute and chronic pain are considered. It is recommended that phototherapy be the treatment of choice for acute pain since this is associated with acute inflammation, the resolution of which by phototherapy accelerates tissue repair where this is proceeding suboptimally. Another advantage of phototherapy is the absence of harmful side effects. Attention is drawn to the inhibition by phototherapy of nerve conduction in small and medium diameter of peripheral nerve fibres, and the possibility that this blockade may reduce nociceptive input to the dorsal horn, down-regulating the spinal and cortical tracts involved in pain, resulting in long-term analgesia. Clinical examples of pain relief by phototherapy are considered, together with the need to monitor effectiveness and to tailor treatments to the response of each patient.
