Abstract: This chapter discusses the tissue distribution, structure, and functions of integrin αD subunit. The integrin αD subunit is expressed at moderate levels on peripheral blood leucocytes. It is expressed strongly on specialized cells in tissues, for example splenic red pulp macrophages and foamy macrophages in aortic fatty streaks. The integrin αD subunit combines with CD18 to form the integrin αDβ2. The αD subunit belongs to the subclass of integrin α subunits with an I-domain near the N-terminus. The N-terminus has been determined by protein sequencing. The integrin αDβ2 binds CD50 (ICAM-3), but not CD54 (ICAM-1) or CD106 (VCAM-1).
