Title: Service-Oriented Architectures and Web Services
Abstract: The service-oriented architectures are all about connections. This chapter describes these connections. It begins with an analogy to connections used in audio-video (AV) systems. The chapter discusses the technology of Web Services as the connection technology of the future. Web Services essentially use XML to create a robust connection. The use of XML moves one away from the fragility of fixed record layout connections that can fail if proper formats are not used. XML also allows the sending of more data than might be used. With Web Services, the extra data will not cause a problem with the receiving service. The chapter discusses that the use of a service-oriented architecture is not limited to large organizations. This architecture represents an opportunity for small and medium-sized organizations. Many services will be provided on some type of fee-for-use basis, which will make them economical for organizations of most any size.
