Title: EXTERNAL TIRE/ROAD NOISE: ITS GENERATION AND REDUCTION
Abstract: It is well known that tire/road noise is a dominant traffic noise source at highway speeds. However, recently performed studies reveal that tire/road noise also can be a dominant noise source at lower speeds. As car manufacturers gradually succeed in reducing power-unit noise, tire noise becomes more and more important as a source of noise. There is a tendency among road administrators to use more aggressive road surfacings for reasons of safety and wear, which amplifies the above trend. Thus there is a need for understanding tire/road noise generation, enabling the design of new, less noisy tire/road systems. This paper summarizes results of a Swedish research and development program on the subject. It discusses experimental techniques, generating mechanisms determined from the testing, and recommendations for reducing tire/road noise.
