Title: Market opportunities for gas-fired cogeneration in US industrial applications. Topical report
Abstract: Existing studies addressing U.S. industrial cogeneration markets were reviewed. Fewer than 10 specifically addressed industrial markets for gas-fired cogeneration systems and contained projections for market potential at a level of detail sufficient to support GRI's program. For perspective on opportunities for these systems over 500 specific industrial processes were analyzed. The discussion is divided into four parts. In Chapter 1, market opportunities for process steam/electric fired cogeneration systems are discussed. In Chapter 2, industrial processes where direct heat/electrical gas-fired cogeneration is technically possible are identified. In Chapter 3, process steam/mechanical drive gas-fired cogeneration industrial processes are identified. In Chapter 4, industrial processes are identified where direct heat/mechanical drive cogeneration opportunities exist. Maximum potential market for gas-fired cogeneration technologies could exceed 75,000 MWe in existing industrial plants. Of the maximum potential, 60% occurs using process energy in the form of steam and 40% in the form of direct heat.
