Title: The concept of economic justice : a critical evaluation of "The just economy, Volume 4 of a Principles of political economy" by J.E. Meade, London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd., 1976
Abstract: ‘The Just Economy” represents a modern neo-classical economic treatment of the social choice problem of equality. The setting for the treatment is the mixed economy where it is assumed that the conditions in the private sector are such that a free competitive market is capable of existing. IN this economy the over-riding concern is the pursuit of the objective of economic equality subject to the constraint that the objective of economic efficiency will be realised. The contention is the paper that conventional economic theory as represented in “The Just Economy” not only is an inappropriate methodology for reconciling the conflict between economic efficiency and economic equality but also may lead to false conclusions. The approach adopted in the paper is wide ranging. IN essence conventional economic theory is criticised from a multidisciplinary perspective.
