Title: Chinese And Overseas Chinese Business History: Three Challenges To The State Of The Field
Abstract: There are three challenges facing the field and sub-field of Chinese business history: (1) the challenge to theorize long-distance trade in nineteenth century studies; (2) the challenge to synthesize business history and political history in early twentieth century studies; and (3) the challenge to explain the dynamics of business networks in late twentieth century studies. In each case it first summarizes the state of the field and then points out a current challenge to the state of the field. It merely claims to point out tat challenge rather than tthet challenge in each period. On the subject of the need to theorize long distance trade in the nineteenth century, the current state of the field has been determined most decisively, it is believed by three scholars: G. William Skinner, William T. Rowe, and Takeshi Hamashita. It concludes that these three challenges are formidable and will not easily be overcome.
