Title: The Superplastic-like Characteristics of a Silicon Carbide Whisker Reinforced Aluminum Composite
Abstract: A silicon carbide reinforced 2124 Al alloy exhibits superplastic-like large elongations to failure at high strain rates. The influence of SiC whiskers on the mechanical properties of the composite was assessed by conducting elevated temperature tensile tests on the composite and an alloy with a composition similar to the matrix in the composite. The composite is more creep resistant than the matrix alloy at low strain rates. There is extensive whisker exposure on the fracture surfaces of composite specimens that exhibited large elongations-to-failure.
