Abstract: The meridional overturning circulation (MOC) overturns and ventilates the great mass of water in the ocean's interior. It was once called the 'thermohaline circulation' to emphasize the importance of buoyancy forces (heating, cooling, freshening, and salinification) in its creation. It is now seen as a connected series of motions that are driven directly or indirectly by the stress of the wind on the ocean's surface.
