Title: Meaning and Reference: The Parables of Jesus in Mark 4
Abstract: Jesus was a story teller and so were many of the early Christians. The New Testament bears witness to this statement. First of all, it contains a large number of stories of Jesus even though they are in a retold form. In addition to that, a major part of the New Testament consists of narrative literature. The parables of the gospels are retold stories. Because of their linguistic environment they should also be analysed with a view to the purpose of their retelling in a new environment. The problem this chapter considers is how embedded parables mean, how do they refer, and what do they refer to. It focuses on Mark 4:1-34 which is presented to the reader as a narrated 'speech' of Jesus containing five parables and an interpretation of one of those parables. The chapter first makes a few observations on meaning and reference. Keywords: early Christians; Mark 4; narrative literature; New Testament; parables
